It is not known when the epidemic will peak.

The third wave of the coronavirus epidemic continues to rise, the head of the epidemiology department of the National Center for Public Health (NNK) told public media on Sunday.

According to Ágnes Galgóczi, the number of new cases registered and the number of deaths do not show a decreasing trend either. Ágnes Galgóczi did not speak about it, but according to an internal ministerial letter held by the RTL Club, the government expects more than 250 deaths a day and 14,000 people in hospital at the peak of the epidemic.

Several virus variants have already appeared in Hungary, most of which have been detected in the British mutant. This variant spreads much faster and can cause more serious infections. This is also increasing the number of patients treated in the hospital and on the ventilator.

Due to the numbers, the government extended the protection measures for a week (although it did not introduce different regional rules). The department head also referred to the importance of complying with the regulations and also carrying out a vaccination campaign. In Hungary, more than 1.5 million people have already been vaccinated. The number of people registered for vaccination is also constantly increasing, already exceeding 3 million.

He added that new drugs and vaccines are much more closely monitored, and vaccinators must report post-vaccination reactions. The indications for the AstraZeneca vaccine have also been investigated and the European Medicines Agency has stated that the AstraZeneca vaccine is safe. Unlike other countries, the use of AstraZeneca has not been discontinued for a short time in Hungary.
