Mayor Gergely Karácsony and Tamás Soproni, Mayor of Terézváros and President of the Association of Budapest Municipalities, wrote a letter to Prime Minister Viktor Orbán offering to help the districts of Budapest after the collapse of the vaccination plan.

The letter says:

Prime Minister! Dear Minister!
The government’s vaccination plan has collapsed. Not only the vaccination measures, but the information about them is also chaotic. For the health and safety of the people of Budapest, we offer help and cooperation so that the government can overcome the chaos it has created. District governments are ready and able to participate in the implementation of the vaccination plan. We will continue to start the construction of new vaccination points, for which the capital and districts will also offer their public spaces.

The municipalities expect a clear regulation of the operation of kindergartens and nurseries, since the Ministerial Decree of March 5 is controversial and does not cover, for example, the regulation. However, this is extremely important as basic services must operate in the country. We need medical attention more than ever, our doctors, our nurses, our law enforcement officers, we have to take out the garbage in case of an epidemic, we have to go to the streetcar. If the people who administer basic services, those who do their jobs with the greatest problems, who take care of us, do not work, the blood circulation of the country will stop.

However, this happens when there is no guard service in the institutions, when there is no choice but to stay at home with the child from preschool, primary school.

In addition to the health victims, the epidemic unfortunately also has a mass of economic victims. The number of people who have already lost their jobs is almost priceless. The failure of workers to accommodate their children while caring for their families can dramatically increase the number of jobs lost.

Therefore, in order to guarantee the functioning of the country and avoid the loss of jobs, we ask the government to allow the organization of childcare, the operation of kindergartens and schools. We support that in this situation, daycare and daycare workers should be ahead of the vaccination order.

The already dire situation was exacerbated by the little considered situation of health workers. In the interest of security of supply, we urge the government to restore the civil service status of healthcare workers. There is no room for any political deliberation here and now, for the government to overcome the chaos that has developed and immediately start negotiations with local governments for this purpose as well.

On behalf of the municipalities of the Budapest district, that is to say 1.7 million citizens of the capital, we expect immediate and precise information and measures from you.

This is in the interest of the country, of Budapest and of all of us.
