At the age of eighty-five, Yuri Vlasov, who won the Olympic championship in Soviet colors in weightlifting at the Five Ring Games in Rome in 1960, died.
The HCLU reported the death of the heavyweight athlete on Saturday.
According to a statement from the Russian Federation, Vlasov underwent surgery for a year, but has since made a full recovery and has not been ill lately.
After Yuri Vlasov’s victory in Rome, he also competed in the 1964 Olympics, winning a silver medal in the heavyweight category in Tokyo. He won four gold medals at the World Championships, was the first six times at the European Championships and set the world record 31 times.
At both Olympics, he carried the flag of the Soviet delegation. After completing his sports career, from 1985 to 1987, he was president of the country’s sports federation. He also participated in literary and political activities, was elected to the legislature, and stood in the 1996 presidential elections in Russia.
