Lionel Messi, six times FC Barcelona’s Ballon d’Or, has been expelled from the Super Cup final against Athletic Bilbao for being hit by a referee with a red card, Marca reported.

As we reported, FC Barcelona and Athletic Bilbao faced each other for the gold medal in the Spanish Super Cup, and the Basque team won 3-2 after extra time. Messit aired in the 121st minute: the Argentine classic received his red card for the first time in his 753rd Barça match.
Spanish newspapers wrote that if the local disciplinary committee qualifies the events as a deliberate hit, the Argentine driver could receive a sanction of up to 12 games, but they also added that the chances are slim. Furthermore, a two to four match ban was more likely, noting that it could certainly be an extenuating circumstance for Messi that he has yet to have a red card in his club career.
Finally, those who made the two-party ban likely were right. In that sense, Messi will miss the Cup match against Cornella on Monday, as well as the champion against Elche. Both games will be played by FC Barcelona.
The Catalan team has indicated that it will appeal the decision.
