The number of registered coronavirus infections increased by more than 30,000 in the first days of January: announced the first national epidemiological summary of this year. Maria Jose Sierra, epidemiologist at the Spanish Center for Coordination of Health Alerts and Emergencies on Monday in Madrid.

The MTI writes: According to the specialist, in the last 24 hours 4,420 cases of infection have been diagnosed from the tests carried out.

The number of cases identified since the beginning of the epidemic is close to two million, and the number of deaths already exceeds 51,000. Last week, 397 people died from the infection.

María José Sierra reported that in the last week of last year around 770,000 coronavirus tests were carried out, with a positivity rate of 10 percent. The expert noted that given the incubation period, it is too early to assess the impact of the holiday period on the spread of the epidemic, but called the growing trend a cause for concern.

Due to the increasing number of cases, new restrictions will be introduced in Catalonia from Thursday until ten days. Among other things, shopping malls, gyms and non-essential services on weekends will be closed. Free movement between settlements is restricted in the region.
