Residents of the La Soufriére volcano of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines in the Caribbean were called to evacuation on Thursday when a volcano dormant for decades began to scatter ash.

The archipelago’s government issued an orange alarm, which means that the volcano could erupt in the next 24 hours. The local disaster management authority advised people living around the volcano to leave their homes immediately. He added that steam, gas and lava were observed at La Soufriére, at an altitude of 1,234 meters, in the northern part of the main island, San Vicente.

The archipelago has about one hundred thousand inhabitants. Volcanic activity was last recorded in 1979.
When La Soufriere erupted in 1902, more than a thousand lost their lives.

The French Caribbean authorities of Martinique are also monitoring the Mount Palée volcano activity, as earthquakes have become more frequent in recent months, causing concern among the population. Mount Palée will show increased activity starting in April 2019. The volcano last erupted between 1929 and 1932. Experts say that the parallel activity of the two volcanoes is not related to each other.
