As expected after the failed negotiations on Wednesday, a minimum wage agreement will not be reached in 2020. The government promises to continue the trial in January.

“Due to the uncertainties caused by the epidemic situation, employers and employees have not yet reached a common denominator regarding the increase in the minimum wage and the guaranteed minimum wage in 2021,” the Ministry of Innovation and Technology issued a statement in this regard. Negotiations will continue in January at the Permanent Consultation Forum on Competition and Government (VKF), he added.

According to the Labor Code, the amount of the minimum wage and the guaranteed minimum wage must be agreed before the end of the year. However, the government issued a decree on New Year’s Eve that allowed the trial to continue in January. To do this, he harnessed the power to deviate from the law in “epidemic emergencies.”

As we wrote, union and employer representatives met for the last time in 2020 on December 30. Unions proposed a 5 percent increase instead of 10 as a compromise, and while employers believe wages should not increase during the crisis, they would have risen by 3.1 percent.
