Hungarian households spent 2.9 percent of their total spending on alcohol.

In 2019, people spent 0.8 percent of the EU’s GDP on alcohol, exactly 117 billion euros, or 42 billion guilders, Eurostat calculated. This means that 1.6 percent of all family spending went to alcohol.

Hungary is among the heavy drinkers:

Hungarian households spent 2.9 percent of their spending on alcoholic beverages.

This is the sixth highest figure in the EU, tied with Croatia and Finland. Latvians (4.8) and Estonians (4.7) spend the most on alcohol, followed by Lithuanians (3.7), Czechs and Poles (3.4). At the bottom of the list are the Netherlands (1.1), Greece and Italy (0.9).

The Hungarian figure of 2.9 percent represents a minimal decrease compared to 3.0 in the previous two years.
