Other researchers may also receive more attention, which is why the biochemist who developed the basis for the most promising coronavirus vaccines is pleased with the recognition.

Coronavirus: the second wave, the second closure

Later than expected by many, but in mid-November, the Hungarian government also decided to try to curb the second wave of the coronavirus epidemic by introducing restrictions. At the time of the decision, 5,000 new infections had been identified per day and the number of deaths from the virus was mostly between 50 and 100 in 24 hours. The first step is partial closure, but how effective it is is questionable. Follow our news!

“I myself always knew that what I was doing was important, but I was not expecting any honor, I was not working for awards”

– Katalin Karikó, Vice President of BioNTech, told Kossuth Radio.

The biochemist, under whose patent one of the vaccines against the Covid-19 disease was developed and who was chosen as the man of the year by the state media, said he was very pleased with the recognition but did not work for the awards, the last time he received a scholarship in 1980 from the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.

As he said, he is also happy about the recognition because it will give other researchers more attention and better recognition of their work and rank in society in the future, but it can also spark young people’s interest in their scientific careers.

At the suggestion that many refer to him as a Nobel laureate, he put it this way: he doesn’t think about it, he doesn’t expect anything. The greatest joy about the vaccine was also that it gave people hope that their lives would return to normal, he emphasized, adding that it was very good for him when they were applauded by doctors and nurses waiting to be vaccinated at the University of Pennsylvania. “I think I cried myself,” recalls the researcher, who received her first vaccination on December 18.

As you said, you will get the second vaccine in early January, but according to statistics, even the first one provides 88 percent protection. “Even the injection site didn’t hurt,” she answered the question of whether she had experienced any side effects.

Katalin Karikó to HVG: for me it is important that as many people as possible get vaccinated as soon as possible

According to Katalin Karikó, neither the Hungarian Academy of Sciences nor the Hungarian Minister of Innovation have congratulated her yet, but “the lateness certainly doesn’t depend.” Together with an immunologist, the biochemist discovered the modified ribonucleic acid-based method on which the most promising coronavirus vaccines are now based.

According to the world famous evolutionary biologist, Katalin Karikó deserves the Nobel Prize
