Union and employer representatives last discussed the amount of the minimum wage for the last time this year, but there is no agreement yet. Neither side will allow it.

There is still no agreement on the amount of the 2021 minimum wage. The unions sat at the negotiating table in the morning with representatives of the employers, the negotiation was chaired by László Palkovics, Minister of Innovation and Technology.

Although both parties have allowed something since November, workers, for example, have proposed a 5 percent increase instead of the previous 10 and then a 6.5 percent increase, while employers would increase wages by 3, 1 percent, although they say there should be no pay increase in the current crisis. talk.

Somehow we sweat

– the vice president of the National Association of Employers and Industries told hvg.hu about the possible increase of 3%. According to Ferenc Rolek, the government is also forecasting 3 percent inflation for 2021, so wages would rise by that amount, although he said “even this cannot be set responsibly.” Referring to the epidemic, he said, “what happened in 2020 cannot be avoided.”

The amount of the minimum wage is currently HUF 107,000 net and HUF 161,000 gross. In the case of a 3.1 percent salary increase, it would increase to 166 thousand HUF gross in 2021, while the guaranteed minimum wage would increase to 217 thousand HUF. Employers have also argued that they would be willing to raise wages further in the event of a further reduction in employer contributions, but the government says the chances are slim.

The unions wanted a multi-stage agreement, which means a 5 percent increase in the minimum wage from January 1, 2021, and a guarantee of an automatic mid-year adjustment. “If there is a change in the main macroeconomic indicators that we agree on, for example, inflation will not be 3% but 4% in the first half of the year, then the minimum wage will increase by 1%,” he explained the president of the Hungarian Trade Union Confederation at hvg.hu. László Kordás. However, on behalf of the government, László Palkovics said he did not support the multi-stage agreement.

If the unions’ proposal were accepted, the minimum wage would increase by 8,500 HUF gross in 2021. Conversely, employers would increase it by 5,000 HUF gross. Therefore, the two parties could not agree on HUF 3,050 essentially gross.

The trial will continue in January. An agreement is expected in mid-January at the earliest.

Each EU Member State could establish the misconception that the European minimum wage could be a single amount. Brussels only offers guidance on what is the appropriate level and how it should be set.
