The avant-garde fashion designer, the maker of the first ready-to-wear garments, died at the age of 98 in an American hospital in Neuilly, near Paris, on Tuesday.

His life

Pierre Cardin was born on July 7, 1922 in San Biagio di Callalta, Italy. Of the seven siblings, he was the youngest. His father wanted him to become an architect, but he was more interested in making clothes. When they moved to Saint-Étienne, he joined a tailor as an assistant.

In 1944 he moved to Paris and became a draftsman at the Paquin fashion house.

And in 1946 he was given the opportunity to design the costumes for the movie Beauty and the Beast.

The following year, she was able to work for Christian Dior and create outfits for the New Look collection. Here he created his famous bar costume.

In 1949, he created his own fashion house.

He made women’s fashion more elegant, more fitted to the body, but he was considered a revolutionary in men’s clothing; among other things, he designed accessories for them.

In 1959, he designed his ready-to-wear collection, which could be purchased at the Lafayette store. To make his clothes cheaper, he replaced manual sewing with a machine.

He traveled to Japan in 1959 and introduced French fashion to the country.

In 1960, he introduced the sleeveless tuxedo among the pieces in his men’s ready-to-wear collection.

The sixties were his greatest successes.

Introduced the space age appearance trend in 1962, the collection was characterized by the use of short, rigid tunics, helmets and glasses. He brought neckless and sleeveless minidresses adorned with geometric patterns, usually three diamonds or concentric circles that contrast strongly. He invented the fashion for unisex pieces around 1966, but that was not widespread at the time.

He designed uniforms for MALÉV staff or for Hungarian athletes traveling to the Olympics.

He has owned the Espace Pierre Cardin Theater since 1970,

which is theater, exhibition hall and catering unit at the same time. He is the director of the Pierre Cardin company and the restaurant and hotel chain Maxim’s operates under his name in many major cities around the world and also sells flowers, chocolates and wines.

Strollers, pens, watches, glasses, perfumes (Cardin, Choc and Énigme), furniture are available, but Cardin-style airplanes and cars have also been designed.
