Index – Foreign – Slovenian-Croatian nuclear power plant closed due to earthquake

[ad_1]

According to the Croatian newspaper Jutarnji List, the Krško nuclear power plant in Vrbina was automatically closed due to the emergency protocol due to the earthquake on Tuesday. The measure was necessary to prevent equipment damage from the first earthquake and subsequent aftershocks, already two after the 6.4 magnitude earthquake.

The power plant, which has been in operation since 1981, was built jointly by Slovenia and Croatia as members of Yugoslavia. It is also important for Slovenia and Croatia:

it provides about a quarter of the total energy needs of Slovenians and about 15 percent of the energy needs of Croats.

The power plant, which is jointly owned by the Slovenian and Croatian state power companies, has a nominal capacity of 730 megawatts.

Krško’s website says that the defense system will scan the nuclear power plant’s equipment and then make a decision on whether to restart the facility.
