Early in the afternoon on Tuesday, a small earthquake was felt in Hungary caused by the earthquake in Croatia around noon. Our readers indicated from the southern and western counties of the country that the earth was shaking there too. We also receive messages of this type from Balatonszemes, Szombathely, Kaposvár, Pécs, Baja, Székesfehérvár, Dunaújváros, Zalaszentlászló and Keszthely. The mild shaking lasted 15 to 20 seconds.

The Paks nuclear power plant has issued a statement on the earthquake.

At 12:21 PM on December 29, 2020, an earthquake was detected in the Paks area. Although the earthquake was also felt at the nuclear power plant, the operation continues uninterrupted. Currently all of our equipment is working properly, however our colleagues are checking all security systems.

They wrote. It was noted that safety improvement measures had been implemented in previous years at the Paks nuclear power plant, under which earthquake resistance had also been significantly strengthened. “It can be said that the Paks nuclear power plant can safely withstand even the strongest earthquakes in our region.”

In Croatia, a 6.4 magnitude earthquake was measured after 12 hours. According to Croatian newspapers, houses collapsed in Petrinja, about 100 kilometers from the Hungarian border, the closest settlement to the epicenter. Nearby Zagreb was also damaged by the earthquake: electricity and telephone service also reached various places. They already know of a dead man in Petrinja: a child has lost his life. Soldiers were assigned to the settlement to help clear the rubble and find people.
