Neszszava Veszprém lost in extra time

German THW Kiel won 36-35 in the extra time battle against men’s handball team Telekom Veszprém in the Champions League semi-finals in Cologne. The people of Veszprém will play Paris Saint-Germain for the bronze medal at 6pm on Wednesday, in the final Kiel will meet Barcelona.

Final four of the Men’s Handball Champions League would have originally been held in May, but the tournament was postponed until the fall due to the coronavirus epidemic. However, the German authorities did not allow it to take place even then, so the event will take place at the end of the year.

In the first semi-final, Barcelona beat Paris Saint-Germain 37-32. With this, it was decided that the winner of the Veszprém-Kiel duel will be the Catalan star club in Tuesday’s final, and the loser will play with the French band for the bronze medal.

Veszprém’s goal is to win the BL. The preparation of the Hungarian champion was also influenced by the coronavirus epidemic, Patrik Ligetvári contracted the infection, so on December 8 the entire team was quarantined. Kiel was forced to do the same. Five players from the German team tested positive for the virus, for which the Kiels were quarantined on December 11.

According to the report on Veszprém’s official Facebook page, Rasmus Lauge and Manuel Strlek are absent from the semifinals due to injury, but Ligetvár has also been left out of the frame. Although the player’s coronavirus tests are already negative, his blood test has not returned a reassuring result, so the club’s doctors will not allow him to play.

Máté Lékai is the only Hungarian player on the frame list against Kiel.
