In Romania, the number of deaths attributed to the coronavirus epidemic topped 15,000 on Friday, while the number of hospitalized infections fell below 10,000 for the first time since mid-October.

Friday’s report from the Strategic Communications Tribe (GCS) also confirmed a decrease in the infection rate in Romania: 3,812 new cases were diagnosed in the last day. This is 75 percent of the average of the last two weeks, and 111 more deaths are 80 percent of the average of the recent period.

The number of known active infections has fallen from a high of 120,000 on November 27 to 67,000, but the pressure on the healthcare system is easing more slowly: from 13,000 at the time, the number of hospitalized patients has dropped to less than 10,000 and the number of severe cases treated in intensive care. It is practically not decreasing, it has been stuck for a month above 1200, so almost all available seats are still occupied.

In Romania, the authorities did not tighten or ease epidemiological precautions during the holidays. At Christmas and New Year’s Eve, the curfew is maintained between 11 pm and 5 am, so instead of the midnight liturgies, ceremonies to celebrate the birth of Jesus were held in churches.
