Members of the cathedral choir sang in protective garb, accompanied by a cellist and a borrowed organ, in the dark medieval building, which is now preparing for a full-scale reconstruction after risky clean-up operations. Twenty were planned to be sung, but for safety reasons their number was reduced to eight.
The singers stood up in accordance with social distance rules to remove the mask needed to sing due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The concert featured Silent Night, The Hymn of Angels, and even Jingle Bells in English and French. The songs were recorded in December and the recording was shown on Thursday at midnight. The audience was not allowed to participate in the recording and is not expected to enter the building until at least 2024.
On April 15, 2019, flames erupted in the more than 850-year-old cathedral, destroying the roof and tower of the hussar. The workers only managed to stabilize the building enough in December this year to begin reconstruction.
