In eastern Japan, authorities began killing more than a million poultry at an egg farm on Thursday after investigations revealed an avian flu infection.

Morita Kenszaku, the governor of Chiba prefecture, asked the soldiers from the Defense Ministry to help slaughter the 1.6 million chickens. The bodies are buried in the city of Ishumi, 80 kilometers southeast of the Japanese capital, Tokyo.

The governor believed that the operation would slow the spread of the epidemic in the area.

Workers at the egg farm found 220 chickens dead Wednesday. The case was immediately reported to the local government.

This is the thirty-second case of infection this season. According to the local Ministry of Agriculture, 4.6 million chickens have so far been killed as a result of the disease. The latest outbreak affected 13 prefectures in the East Asian country.
