Healthcare has never faced challenges like it did at the time of the coronavirus epidemic, and workers have shown their true strength and unity: The Rector of Semmelweis University praised Kossuth Radio Good morning, Hungary! Thursday.

According to the MTI report, Béla Merkely also spoke about it: During the epidemic period, hospitals helped each other and universities jointly carried out a large representative screening to determine exactly how infectious the virus is and where we are in the epidemic.

In the spring, in the first wave of the epidemic, the experts also only got acquainted with the virus and, with swift and decisive action, they kept the virus infection practically off limits. In the second wave of the epidemic, it is estimated that up to 20 percent of the population could be infected. However, it is gratifying that two thirds of the “peaceful” capacity of intensive care units have been able to stop the number of patients

Béla Merkely said. He added that, thanks to the protective measures, the numbers appear to be declining rather slowly after the plateau phase. He also covered his Christmas Eve, which said:

We cannot leave the elderly alone, but we must follow rules that ensure that they cannot become infected.

For this reason, he also recommended the use of masks within the family, washing hands every hour and maintaining a distance of one and a half meters. He hopes that after Christmas, vaccination will begin in healthcare, first to protect those who work directly on the front lines and then to vaccinate older chronic patients who are most exposed to infection.

Vaccination is much safer than any other medicine. It is based on a technology that ensures at many points that it cannot cause any significant harm to the body. Minor side effects are in no way comparable to what a coronavirus can cause

– said the rector of Semmelweis University, adding that a national vaccination campaign can stop the epidemic, it is important that everyone understands that the vaccine is the solution to the epidemic.

He said of a new variant of the coronavirus identified in the UK: In London, most illnesses appear to be caused by the virus, but those cases are not more severe, there are no more patients on a ventilator, and mortality is not higher. In this regard, Béla Merkely said:

their infectivity may be stronger, but it only draws attention to the fact that they will all adhere even more to the standards that have been proposed so far.
