As a result of Brexit, the rules under which UK citizens can enter Hungary will change from January 2021, police said on their website Wednesday.

The communications service of the National Police Headquarters (ORFK) has published an information on police.hu in relation to the departure of the United Kingdom from the European Union due to the change of entry conditions due to the change of status of British citizens.

It was written that under the UK Citizens and Family Members Right of Residence Act 2020 British citizens and their family members who arrived and stayed in Hungary for a longer period of time before December 31, 2020 can retain their acquired rights as a result of EU membership after January 1, 2021. They can request and receive the status of beneficiary, the conditions of which can be read on the website of the National General Directorate of Migration (oif.gov.hu).

For UK nationals and family members who are not entitled to free movement and who are not eligible for beneficiary status as of next January, the rules which can be found HERE apply. Not suitable for citizens of the EU, Norway, Iceland, Switzerland or Liechtenstein in the section on.

The ORFK drew attention to the fact that UK citizens can still enter Hungary without a visa.

Following a referendum in June 2016, the UK announced its intention to leave the European Union in spring 2017 and left the organization on January 31, 2020.

On January 30, 2020, the Council of Representatives of the Governments of the EU Member States also finally adopted the Brexit Agreement, thus completing the exit approval process by the EU. The agreement entered into force at midnight CET on January 31 and the transitional period began until December 31. This period could have been extended by agreement between the two parties, but in June this year, Britain did not want to take advantage of this opportunity. According to a joint statement by the heads of the EU institutions and the British Prime Minister in June, the transition period will end on December 31, in accordance with the provisions of the agreement to terminate British membership in the EU under the London decision.
