In addition to desktop and laptop computers, the market for monitors for home or office use is still huge. This year, the coronavirus epidemic must have affected this sector as well, but in 2019, these products were still highly marketable, with around 120 million of them finding hosts around the world. The supply is huge, as many companies, large and small, are trying to bite into bites of this gigantic cake.
Of course, the needs of the users, that is, the end users, can be very different from each other and as a result the products can also be very different. In our current article, we have been looking for the answer to what to look for when buying a monitor, what are the important and irrelevant parameters.
Not just with a notebook?
Many people may think that a separate monitor is not necessary next to a laptop. It is true that laptops have their own screen, but in most cases it is smaller than monitors.
And the fact is, the larger diagonal is also better for work, play, and film.
Therefore, it is not the devil to buy and connect a monitor to a laptop. Many people use this set, and in the office, among others, we prefer this solution.
The most important thing
The first and foremost thing to think about before making a purchase decision is what, for what task, for example,
We are looking for a complement for games, consume multimedia content, edit design programs or run office applications.
It is also important in what circumstances we want to use this product and how much money we spend on it. During the election In most cases, one has to maneuver significantly, to weigh, because a perfect all-round product hasn’t been made yet, and I suspect it won’t even last a while.
Folded or flat
The curved design of televisions has now practically disappeared, but this line has remained with monitors, not by chance. This is because a curved case can be really good, but only if there is a single user in front of the screen in the middle.
Otherwise, the image is already markedly distorted, which can be very confusing when someone in an office, for example, explains or points to their staff on their screen.
Resolution
Today, Full HD (1920 x 1080) resolution is considered the standard, and 3440 x 1440 and 4K (3840 x 2160) devices are also available. By implication, more pixels generally means a higher price. The great advantage of a higher resolution is that the content is more pleasant and more details can be very important for certain types of typically graphic work.
Aspect ratio
The traditional 16: 9 aspect ratio is the most common (this is also the case for televisions and laptops), and it is also the best choice for everyday use, most games and multimedia content. There are also so-called ultra-wide monitors with an aspect ratio of 21: 9, which can be very useful as you can open multiple windows side by side.
Movies have this aspect ratio as well, so if you want to watch them in their original format, this is the best option as there will be no black stripes at the bottom and top. One or two manufacturers went even further and created striped “monsters” with an aspect ratio of 32:10. These can be good for extreme uses like video trimming, music editing, or car simulators, but in everyday use it is very confusing that most of the image is black and only the content is visible in the middle. It is also worth mentioning the old 4: 3 aspect ratio, which is now out of date, the contents are not optimized for this either, so it is better to forget about them.
Image refresh rate
Monitors traditionally have an image refresh rate of 60 Hz, which is capable of displaying sixty frames per second, so-called frames. But in the recent period, 120, 144, 165 and even 240 hertz monitors have appeared, which are inherently more expensive. For these, the movement (if we scroll the web, for example) seems more continuous, but they are really only important in games.
Of course, this also requires hardware that can squeeze so many frames out of itself. Movies and videos are clocked at 24, 48, or 60 frames per second, so anyone looking for an editor primarily for multimedia content or office applications will incur no additional cost.
FreeSync, G-Sync
These names cover the dynamically changing refresh rate. That is, on the monitor, the refresh rate changes in real time based on the video signal from the video card. This eliminates image fragmentation, frame duplication, and puts image information in front of the user’s eyes sooner. It only matters in games, and you also need hardware that supports one or the other method.
Panel type
Currently, three panel technologies dominate this industry: VA, IPS and TN. The latter is the cheapest, but it also produces the worst image quality. In the past, it outperformed its competitors in terms of response time in games, but now rival procedures have been successful in this area as well. VA-type displays have the best contrast, but lag behind IPS displays in terms of color accuracy and viewing angle.
Built-in sound system
In the past, speakers have not been integrated into monitors, but these models have appeared in recent years.
These usually don’t sound prominent, but if there aren’t any speakers or other external sound systems nearby, this solution can be very helpful.
Design
There are so many good tips on aesthetics that everyone can buy a product they like. If someone gets the colored LEDs illuminated on the back, they can also choose a product that has been launched with this extra, we consider it completely unnecessary. More importantly, it is possible to change the height of a monitor screen from the base and whether the screen can be tilted and rotated. This can be very helpful in finding the right place for your monitor and can be useful in an office environment if we can easily show the screen to colleagues.
Price
Huge differences can be discovered in this area. Cheaper products are not necessarily worse, as the image quality can be good, they simply lack the sound system, variable refresh rate technology, the simplest design, etc. etc. If someone can’t or wants to spend a lot on a monitor, they shouldn’t be frustrated either, because you can find a whole foot product for less. You may be able to buy a used one, but here you need to check it carefully and test the product before buying. For example, you should look for pixel defects on the panel and that the connectors are seated securely in their sockets.
