Tens of thousands of truckers remained stranded in England due to border closures, and drivers were fighting with police at the entrance to the port of Dover. Telex.hu also spoke with several Hungarian pilots stranded outside, who said that although in principle they had already started testing the pilots, and those with a negative test would be transferred to France, the opening would not go easy. The first trucks left for France on Wednesday afternoon, according to a BBC report, but thousands more are waiting.

Traffic in the port of Dover was stopped after France closed the border for fear of spreading a new variant of the coronavirus. Another 50 countries have introduced similar steps, suspending air and rail traffic with Great Britain. In Dover, thousands of trucks, some estimated at 10,000, could be congested.

French authorities finally opened the border, but only truckers who tested negative for COVID will be allowed. Some of the truckers were diverted by the British authorities to Manston Airport to await test results, while others waited at the Port of Dover and expressed their displeasure at the police who blocked the entrance to the port. According to the British authorities, a driver has so far been arrested.

The drivers were very unhappy with the conditions there: the thousands of drivers hardly have access to the bathroom, according to the drivers who told Telex.hu, they are not allowed to cook at the airport or go to the store, while many are not prepared to wait days. so they don’t have enough food and drinks. Hungarian drivers living abroad buy and bring food to Hungarian drivers, volunteer shoppers coordinate on Facebook groups by truck. Since the volunteers cannot enter the airport where the trucks are, they hand the packages over to other drivers who distribute them. The authorities also distribute food and drink, but the Hungarian truck driver who informed the portal only knew. Drivers also complain that they are only given incomplete information on what to expect when they can finally return home.

“I spoke to the police this morning, they told me that from 6 in the morning everyone will test for Covid, which is negative, you can go to the ferry, to the train. It’s 11 in the morning and I haven’t arrived yet. a driver, indicating how slow the test was.

Waberer’s indicated in a portal question that 200 of its drivers were stuck in England waiting for buses in Calais. They stay in touch with the drivers, but the company doesn’t know much more than the drivers about how things are going in Dover.

Drivers who test positive will be quarantined in England for 10 days; British authorities are considering its location. Drivers are tested in a way that gives results in 30 minutes, but even so, it can take a while for thousands of drivers stuck outside to be tested. The British Army is also helping with the tests.
