Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law Tuesday that exempts all former Russian presidents and their families from being held responsible for crimes committed in their lives. Under the law, former presidents can no longer be questioned in police investigations, arrested or searched.
Previously, former presidents could not be held responsible solely for crimes committed during their tenure.
As in the previous regulations, former presidents can only be deprived of their immunity if they are accused of treason or other particularly serious crimes, and the charges are approved by the Supreme Court and the Constitutional Court. However, the new law grants one seat for life in the Senate of the Russian Federation, which in itself also strengthens criminal immunity.
The regulation has further bolstered rumors that Putin is about to resign due to poor health, although this information was previously denied by a Kremlin spokesman. (Guardian)
