EU Justice Commissioner Didier Reynders emphasized in a press release Tuesday that, given the current risks, Member States must continue to take concerted action to avoid unnecessary travel between the UK and the EU.

At the same time, general travel bans should not prevent EU and UK citizens from returning home. “The ban on flights and trains must be lifted in such cases, as we must ensure that basic-purpose travel is possible and we must avoid disruptions in the supply chain,” Reynders said.

Among other things, the committee would oblige those traveling for the basic purpose to get tested for coronavirus 72 hours before the start of the trip to avoid quarantine. International transport workers should be exempted from the cross-border travel ban and testing and quarantine requirements, and the quarantine obligation for transit passengers should be lifted, the committee said.
