Czech archaeologists claim that a nail from the cross on which Jesus Christ died was once found in a monastery in southern Bohemia.
A 6-centimeter piece of nail was found in a cavity in a cellar in the basement of the Milevsko monastery. There is also a 21 karat gold cross in the corner.
According to dendrological examinations, the 26-centimeter and 16-centimeter locket box is made of oak wood measuring 260 to 416 centimeters according to our time. The lid was a gold plate with the inscription IR.
“In this context, the letters can be an abbreviation of the Latin Iesus Rex, or King of Jesus.”
said archaeologist Jiri Sindelar, presenting the discovery on Friday.
According to experts the importance and rarity of the relic is similar to that of the reliquary of Saint Moore, preserved in a mining town in north-western Bohemia, in the Becov nad Teplou castle museum, twenty kilometers south of Karlovy Vary. Adorned with nearly 200 precious stones, the gilt silver and copper relics are today one of the most valuable and feared works of art in the Czech Republic.
A secret corridor led to the cavity, which was discovered by archaeologists in the spring. Cavers have also assisted in its excavation, as the corridor is only 60 times 60 centimeters long.
The Premontrei Monastery in Milevsko is the oldest such facility in southern Bohemia. The relic may have been hidden during the Hussite War (1419-1434), when the monastery was repeatedly raided.
According to Archbishop Dominik Duka of Prague, the find traces Christianity to its roots.
