Of the more than 272,000 vaccines administered in the United States as of Saturday morning, six cases of severe allergic reactions were reported Friday night, including in one person who had previously received those other vaccines.

The Epidemiological Authority stated that the second dose should not be administered to those who have had a severe reaction to the first dose of one of the Covid-19 vaccines. The agency also warned that hospitals designated as vaccination sites must have adrenaline medication to treat allergic shock.

Special emphasis was placed on the need to avoid vaccination for those with a history of allergic reactions to any of the components of the new vaccines, so those who are prone to this should consult their doctor. However, people with other types of allergies, caused by drugs, food, animals, latex, or environmental conditions, can be vaccinated.

The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has so far approved emergency use from two manufacturers, Pfizer / BioNTech and Moderna. The nationwide vaccination campaign began with the older vaccine last Monday, while the Moderna vaccine will only begin shipping to the country this weekend.

Healthcare professionals will closely monitor any side effects from the vaccines. After vaccination, the vaccinated must remain in place for a short period of time in case of any adverse reaction. According to the CDC, all of the serious allergic reactions reported so far occurred within a few minutes of the observation period, so patients received immediate care.

So far, less than 1.5 percent of those vaccinated have experienced mild side effects that have prevented those vaccinated from performing their normal activities, the CDC added.
