Hennady Kernes, mayor of the city of Kharkiv in northeastern Ukraine, died at the age of sixty-one from complications from the Covid-19 disease. They had been shot before, in a wheelchair, Infosart writes.

The news was also confirmed by Ihor Terehov, Kharkiv City Council Secretary. As a trustee, he will now serve as mayor until the early mayoral election in three months.

Kerness, 61, became infected in September and was transferred to the Charité University Clinic in Berlin for treatment due to his deteriorating health.

Kernesz studied law and public administration at the Harkiv State University of Economics. Since 1998 he was a member of the Kharkiv City Council and since 2010 he was mayor. In 2014, an assassination attempt was made against him for his political activities, he received a gunshot wound that forced him to sit in a wheelchair – reads the portal.
