Biden Won, Trump Is Still Fighting: 2020 US Presidential Election

Presidential elections were held in the United States on November 3. The competition between Republican Donald Trump and Democratic challenger Joe Biden was very close in several states, so it turned out only on November 7 that Joe Biden would be the 46th president of the United States. Follow the events and possible consequences of the prolonged presidential election on hvg.hu.

Electoral voting began in the United States on Monday, and several federal states have already voted for the country’s next president.

Voters will gather in each state capital on December 14 to formally vote in line with electoral support. The electoral votes will be sealed and sent to the President of the Senate, and the votes cast in the Electoral College will be formally summarized at a joint meeting of the two Houses of Congress on January 6.

Democrat Joe Biden got 306 votes in the U.S. Electoral College, while Democrat Donald Trump, the incumbent, got 232, according to the November presidential election. Victory requires 270 electoral votes in an electoral college of 538 members.

Each member state has the right to as many electors as there are representatives and senators. In the vast majority of Member States, the winning candidate will receive the entire electorate of the Member State, regardless of the victory rate.

The electoral vote is getting more attention than usual this year after Donald Trump refused to admit defeat and brought up electoral fraud.
