The late Ferenc Liszt award-winning musician István Bergendy, founder and leader of the Bergendy ensemble, has passed away. The saxophonist, clarinetist and composer passed away at age 81 from complications from the coronavirus infection, the family told MTI.

The Bergendy band was formed in the late 1950s, taking the name of the founder in 1962. They reached their peak in the first half of the 1970s, when the band became popular throughout the country with the union of Ferenc Demjén ( bass, voice, lyricist) and Norbert Laczin (keyboards, composer). There were hits like

Come back, bum, the Moon is from Cheese, you broke my heart in the Pieces, or in the backpack

István Bergendy composed the music for Süsü, the Dragon, Futrinka Street and several other television series, as well as the television dance school I Dance with You, and also wrote musicals. In 2009 he was awarded the Official Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Hungary, and in 2011 he received the Ferenc Liszt Prize in recognition of his outstanding musical and artistic activities.
