Angela Merkel The German chancellor announced on Sunday that a lockdown would be reintroduced across Germany due to the dramatic spread of the coronavirus epidemic from Wednesday.

According to a BBC article, non-vital shops and schools will also be closed on January 10. Banks and grocery stores may still be open, but New Years celebrations will be banned, as will the sale of fireworks. Employers are asked to allow working from home to the greatest extent possible.

Merkel introduced the new rules after consulting with the heads of the 16 states and, as he said,

measures had to be decided urgently.

In Germany, the number of infected people has increased dramatically in recent days. In the last 24 hours, 20,200 new cases have been identified and the number of infections has exceeded 1.3 million since the outbreak began.

There were also 321 new victims of the coronavirus in one day, leaving 21,787 people dead from the disease.

Restaurants and bars have been closed for the past six weeks, and some states have introduced curfews.
