Slovakia should congratulate Hungary and Poland

These two countries have been very successful in the EU debate, says the former Slovakian prime minister in a Facebook video.

Former Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, president of the opposition Smer-SD, highlighted in his new Facebook video that György Soros attacked German Chancellor Angela Merkel for Hungary today confirms that in the dispute between Hungary, Poland and the rest of the European Union
these two countries have been very successful.

New EU rules, which condition the use of EU aid on the rule of law and democracy, have sparked a heated debate in the EU, with the exception of Slovakia, where Fico says the government agrees to EU level just so they don’t get mad at Brussels.

During the debate, Hungary and Poland vetoed the adoption of the EU budget for 2021-27 and the special financial instrument for the fight against Covid, and since the approval of the budget requires the consent of all EU Member States, the veto has extraordinary power. According to Fico, the Hungarian and Polish veto made sense.
These countries have rightly argued that such regulation could be abused, e.g. countries that do not agree to a mandatory migration quota.

If a country does not agree with something that large countries want, they could easily find something that they could realize is a problem, such as a violation of the rule of law, and therefore not pay aid to that of another. way they would be entitled. In such a simple system, countries could be blackmailed according to the original idea.

Fico emphasized that if Soros had joined this debate between Poland and Hungary and the rest of the Union, it would certainly have been about migration, because Soros would bring all the world’s migrants to the EU.

Even the Czech Republic, through President Milos Zeman, supported Hungary and Poland.
These two countries have been very successful, and Slovakia betrayed V4 cooperation.

  • First of all, the next regulation will only protect the EU budget and the financial interests of the Union from fraud caused by corruption and conflicts of interest. Member States cannot be blamed for any other alleged violation of the rule of law and democracy, and this cannot be used to avoid being asked for EU funds.
  • Secondly, because the Commission is committed to drawing up the guidance of the regulation for a given Member State, but in close cooperation with that Member State. If a Member State submits a proposal to the Court of Justice of the European Union for the annulment of this Regulation, the Commission may only issue such guidelines after the Court has ruled.
  • Third, because the regulations that are introduced must respect the national identities, political foundations and constitutional provisions of the Member States.

A regulation that conditions the use of EU funds will not be used against countries that share other points of view on the fundamental issue of European coexistence, and these will certainly include a mandatory quota for migrants, Fico emphasized.

Slovakia should congratulate Hungary and Poland as well as thank them, as they have also defended the interests of the Slovaks. However, instead of maintaining the proven V4 cooperation, the Slovak government betrayed it. He favored praise on the important policy coordination of the large countries in the V4 framework, which proved so beneficial. 65 million people in V4 countries is not so easy to ignore. According to Fico, such a reaction from neighbors is unprecedented and could have catastrophic consequences for Slovakia in the future.
