The new stadium will be built in 2023

The construction of the Budapest Athletics Stadium has started, the project includes the rehabilitation of the VITUKI site and the Danube area known until now as industrial areas, and a new public sports and recreation park open for the capital, BMSK Investment, Technical Development, Sports Közbeszerzési Zrt. Investment agency.

According to the information, in connection with the construction of the National Athletics Stadium for the 2023 World Athletics Championships, the tower building of the VITUKI Water and Environmental Management Research Center will be demolished with explosive technology on December 10. New flood defenses, coastal walkways, bike lanes and boat stations are announced to be built in the development area from the Rákóczi Bridge to the Kvassay Lock and across the new cable bridge to North Csepel. The development will also connect the northern and southern areas of the entire Pest embankment on foot, by bike and by water until reaching Csepel island.

The communication emphasized that the modification of urban plans that affect the current planning area would clear the image of the spectacular Danube corridor, which would determine the urban landscape.

Instead of the old industrial functions and the view of residential parks and high-rise office buildings, which were previously formulated as design proposals, low-build sports and recreational functions will be created.

One of the main objectives of the project is to link the development to the outstanding natural values of the area in a dignified way.

They point out that during the preparation of the work, the condition of the VITUKI tower building, built in 1976, was also evaluated. The feasibility study examined the structure, stability and possible future function of the tower house designed by István Mühlbacher (Industrial Plan) and found that the tower could no longer be used in its current state, making it necessary to demolish it for technical and economic reasons.

The winning construction consortium in the public procurement procedure chose blast technology, which resulted in significant time savings, rather than hierarchical demolition technology, which was approved. During the demolition, the tower building will lean towards the Rákóczi Bridge, parallel to its longest side. The building complex’s 1,864-square-meter “pie building” will be demolished using traditional technology, the investment agency reported.
