As Origo reported, on December 1 the great radio telescope of the famous Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico collapsed. The US National Science Foundation (NSF) has released a spectacular drone recording of the telescope’s last moments.
On December 1, another cable running along a huge 900-ton platform on a 305-meter plate broke and the collapse of the structure completely ruined the entire facility. This moment was captured by one of the drones observing the observatory.
Fortunately in misfortune, there were no casualties due to the evacuation.
The Puerto Rico telescope has been used by some 250 researchers around the world, making it one of the main tourist attractions on the island with about 90,000 visitors a year. The telescope was built in the 1960s with funding from the Department of Defense as part of the development of anti-ballistic missile defense. During its 57 years of operation, it has withstood hurricanes, humidity, humidity and a series of strong earthquakes.
The giant cholescope helped observe the world’s asteroids heading for Earth, supported later Nobel Prize-winning research, and helped determine whether the newly discovered planets might be inhabited.
The 305 meter wide telescope also appeared in the James-Bond film starring Jodie Foster’s Connection and The Golden Eye.
