The world-famous Arecibo Observatory suffered serious damage this year, so it was decided to demolish the Puerto Rico facility in a controlled manner. This did not happen in the end, the observatory collapsed on its own in early December.
The US National Science Foundation recently released a recording of the dramatic event. The video shows a 900-ton battery falling onto the 305-meter-wide antenna below. The facility was being monitored by a drone when the accident occurred, but the incident was also recorded by the visitor center camera.
The Arecibo Observatory began its work 57 years ago and has assisted the international scientific community in many areas, from the analysis of potentially dangerous asteroids to the observation of distant planets. The installation has also appeared in movies, including Golden eye nineteen ninety five James bondhe also appeared in the movie. Experts say that the loss of the observatory leaves an irreplaceable space.
