Coronavirus: This is what you should prepare for, according to one of the heads of the medical chamber

What was only a fear in the spring has now become a reality in many places. We are close to compromising care as patients flood the care system, creating an impossible situation and deteriorating the quality of treatment in patients’ lives, said Tamás Svéd, secretary of the Hungarian Medical Chamber (MOK) of Magyar Narancs. In an interview.

What was only a fear in the spring has now become a reality in many places. It is difficult to define how long the healthcare system can bear the burden because there is no acute angle when we say that it has held out so far and not now. This is a process in which the quality of treatment deteriorates as the number of patients increases. The supply is already compromised in many places, Tamás Svéd told the newspaper.

Although the number of people needing hospital care is constantly increasing, at the same time the number of deaths is only slower, and this is difficult to interpret. In the optimistic scenario, we are slowly reaching a plateau, but there is still no rational explanation for this. Therefore, we must be prepared for the fact that, despite the restrictions, the number of diseases and deaths will increase for some time, said the secretary of the MOK.

According to Tamás Svéd, who says the situation will return to normal in late winter and early spring due to the vaccine is probably too optimistic.

He also spoke about the fact that although you have to be very flexible in organizing your work, there is no progress in awareness regarding spring. They don’t see the exact numbers, the trends, what is happening in the neighboring institution, how busy they are, how much they can help each other.

With the Reality project launched by MOK, they just want to show a real situation based on real information, and then they get real help. As solutions that soften minimal healing conditions become more prevalent, patients’ chances of survival are reduced and, beyond a point, they have to decide what is really for the benefit of the patient, of all patients and of the Hungarian society; And when they only do fake activities so they can know it, they are trying to cure everyone. This is the case when it comes to devising a method well regulated by the Code of Ethics, based on which patients are selected the ones with the best chances of survival, rather than trying to save everyone and the survival rate will end up much worse.

If there are 6-10 patients per specialist in an intensive care unit, the next step should not be to expand the department, but to make other rational decisions: refer patients, involve other institutions in care if possible, or if there is no other solution, then patients are selected according to rational and ethical principles – emphasized Tamás Svéd.

If the mortality of patients on board is around 80 to 90 percent, and unfortunately that news also reaches the MOK, then by installing more machines and connecting more people, the staff is completely exhausted and the attention drowns in the chaos. In such cases, it should be considered whether more lives can be saved by mechanically ventilating fewer patients and selecting those patients better.
