Romain Grosjean must skip at least one race after his icy accident on Sunday. Instead, the Haas barn test pilot intervenes.

Romain Grosjean, the French Haas driver, spent 28 seconds in his race car burning huge flames at the Bahrain Formula One Grand Prix after piercing a barrier lining the track following a failed overtaking maneuver. Due to the enormous force of the collision, the pilot was affected by a force of more than 50 G on impact, the car split in two and the spilled fuel ignited immediately.

Grosjean was able to free himself from the seat and get out of the accident on his own. By then, several referees and the staff of the medical car from the series had arrived at the scene, the French had managed to cross the border with the help of the latter, and they had also provided first aid.

One of them, Ian Roberts, the F1 series rescue medic, said after the incident:

It was like a furnace, we only saw the red flames and then we noticed it trying to free itself, which it gradually achieved. One of the firefighters started putting out very early, and the gunpowder extinguisher smothered the flames so much that when Romain got up high enough, we were able to rescue him over the damaged railing. “

The specialist added that if Grosjean had not been able to get up from the seat on his own, they would not have been able to rescue him in such a fire.

Grosjean, who suffered second-degree burns to both hands, sent a video message from his hospital bed Sunday night. He spoke of how well he was and stressed that he owes his life to the HALO system, known only as halo, which protects the heads of competitors, which is mandatory in the competition series since 2018 and which he himself previously opposed.

The Frenchman was visited on Monday by Haas team boss Günther Steiner, who revealed: the rider is fine, but his bindings have not yet been removed, so he does not know what his injuries are like. However, he is expected to be released from the hospital on Tuesday, but he will definitely have to miss at least one race.

The stable later announced that Grosjean will be replaced by Brazilian Pietro Fittipaldi, grandson of two-time world champion Emerson Fittipaldi, at this weekend’s Sahir Grand Prix, the 16th race of the season. The racer has been a test and reserve rider for Haas for the past two years and will now make his racing debut.
