Romain Grosjean is sure that the halo saved his life.

One of the most terrifying accidents in recent years has occurred since the start of the race of Formula One’s 15th season, the Bahrain Grand Prix. Haas driver Romain Grosjean made a sudden maneuver in front of Danyiil Kvjat, the Alpha Tauri driver, the wheels of the cars collided and the Frenchman hit the metal railing on the right side of the track at full speed. The car broke in two and the spilled fuel immediately exploded into a ball of fire.

Grosjean spent long seconds in the flames, but was able to leave the race car alone. A shocking photo was taken of the escape moments:

It was already revealed at the time of the broadcast that the competitor had not suffered serious injuries, but he was taken to hospital for investigation. His team leader, Günther Steiner, spoke about his burned hands and ankles, but nothing broke.

Grosjean got out of his hospital bed Sunday night and said he was fine, thank you for the messages and care he had received at the racetrack and at the hospital.

He also added that his life was saved by the HALO system, which we call just a halo, the introduction of which he had previously opposed. Rider head protection component that has been mandatory in the series since 2018. It was developed after Jules Bianchi suffered a serious accident at the 2014 Japanese Grand Prix after slipping off the wet asphalt and colliding with a tow truck he pulled Adrian Sutil’s car from the rollover. The competitor died in July 2015 as a result of the accident.

F1 sporting director Ross Brawn told Motorsport.com after the race that they would investigate what had happened to Grosjean and why the metal railing Haas had crashed into and the front end had punctured it. Field workers repaired the railing for almost an hour before the field could start again. After the second start, the safety car had to be sent to the track due to the accident of the Lance Stroll racing pointos.

The race was ultimately won by Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton, it was the 95th victory of his career, ahead of two Red Bull drivers, Max Versappen and Alexander Albon.
