Even after an orderly full shutdown due to the coronavirus epidemic, severe restrictions are expected in Austria, Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz said in an interview with Sunday’s edition of the daily Kleine Zeitung, according to MTI. It is worth paying attention to the events in Austria from the Hungarian point of view because Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has repeatedly called the country a laboratory, the measures of which will be followed by the Hungarian situation in two weeks.
The chancellor tried for the first time to undo overly optimistic expectations about easing after the current deficit. Tight restrictions can still be expected and the government is not planning a hasty opening.
“Everyone should be aware that we still have to live in austerity for weeks, months,” Kurz said of the epidemic and the measures. According to him, the realistic goal is to open schools and business units with “cautious steps” after December 7, he added. However, the government’s opening strategy may be decisively influenced by the evolution of the epidemic curve.
The chancellor also spoke about the massive tests starting next week, which aim to locate asymptomatic diseases and break the chains of infection by detecting them.
The prime minister promised on Wednesday an action plan on the debate on the opening of the ski slopes. The ski slopes are still closed and, as much as you may regret, the leisure and sports facilities will not be among the first to reopen.
However, the stated intention of the government is to allow more sports for people in the foreseeable future, especially when it comes to individual and outdoor sports activities. What is certain, however, is that meetings after the ski slopes are closed at night will only be allowed again the next winter season, Kurz added.
In Austria, the 24-hour curfew has been in effect since November 17, with schools, shops, restaurants, cultural and leisure facilities closed, only shops selling basic goods, and pharmacies open, all of which are expected to is open until December 6.
Prime Minister Viktor Orbán used to refer to Austria as Hungary’s virus laboratory, which is a week or two ahead of the internal situation, so it is possible to predict the expected measures from there.
However, according to the graph below, the epidemic situation in Hungary continues to deteriorate, while in the neighboring country there is a slow improvement.
