From data from four universities, it can be concluded that the proportion of those registered with a positive coronavirus infection is decreasing in Hungary, the rector of Semmelweis University said on channel M1 on Thursday night.

According to Béla Merkely, the number of infected on Thursday plus 2,000 does not mean that the epidemic has “gained strength”, but the numbers have increased due to so-called antigen tests, which are also used to screen teachers. Then, thanks to the tests at the national level, there will be more positive cases, he explained, adding that there is no discrepancy in the final results of PCR tests, that is, tests on hereditary material, and based on these, the number of infected people will gradually decrease.

Regarding the Christmas holidays, he pointed out that if a large part of a family has already had the disease, it is most likely that they will not be infected again, since they know very few cases that have certainly reappeared. At the same time, this does not mean that those who have already suffered from the disease can behave irresponsibly, they must also comply with epidemiological regulations, added Bála Merkely.

He also mentioned how many could have been infected before the vaccine came; according to their own estimates, about one and a half million, that is, about 15 percent of the Hungarian population. He added that the proportion of people vaccinated and already protected against the disease should reach 60 percent of the general population.
