Index – National – The president of the National Faculty of Education also tests himself

How to imagine the pedagogical tests started this week in practice, which, as a sixth grade primary school, also affects the Miklós Révai secondary school in Győr?

Péter Horváth: Educators who teach seventh and eighth grade students who are still attending education are still regularly attending school, most of whom have taken the core coronavirus test. However, of the teachers who did not teach in 7th or 8th grade, so they were not actually among students and colleagues for two weeks, especially if they were asymptomatic, few came to take the test.

How are the first experiences? Did the tests go smoothly?

I am very happy with Monday because the process was well organized. The test itself lasted from 10 am to 3 pm, and a total of 24 colleagues attended. Four medical students and two from the government office came to do the administration. Two of the four medical students took the sample and two evaluated the results. They all arrived in protective masks, spacesuits, and were kind, patient and worked skillfully. I also tested myself, which was a lot less unpleasant than expected.

Based on experience thus far, some educators do not undergo testing because they fear that if the crown is found to be asymptomatic positive, they will be sent with sick pay. so he only receives 60 percent of his salary. What do you think about this?

If one of the teachers turns positive and therefore receives sick pay, he is in principle entitled to 100 percent of his salary, but he can only get the full amount through a relatively complicated and lengthy procedure. As president of the National College of Education, I personally struggled to make the process much simpler than it is now, I have spoken with the secretary of state, the Klebelsberg Center, the tank district, but they say that the legislation does not allow it now . For the most part, it is still certain that educators will not receive 100 percent of sick pay.

Did you mention that you have proven yourself, according to them, you claim that educators should prove themselves despite the above?

Regardless of this, I believe that if the problem of sick pay deters someone from evaluation, it is irresponsible behavior, as that person does not believe that, as a positive coronavirus, it can infect students and colleagues in the same way. I’d rather go try it, even if I can get less money after that, because that’s in the common interest of all of us, the highest interest.

In the current epidemic, almost everyone is making a sacrifice, many are losing their jobs, their entire existence. We should not be looking for loopholes, but rather what will make us safe and how we can safely do our jobs with minor reorganizations. How can we expect society as an educator to support us if we don’t?

How much did the coronavirus enter Révai’s primary school during the first wave or now? I also ask why, according to the news, Győr is still one of the most infected cities.

At the end of September and beginning of October, we also experienced a more difficult period, when four or five of the 27 classes could not go to school in overlap because they were quarantined due to an infected student. Sometimes several of our fellow teachers couldn’t work, but fortunately the school didn’t close because we were able to do our work. However, in the two weeks before fall break, no class was quarantined and only one of our colleagues was ill.

Also, how do they spiritually live the epidemic situation?

On the part of the students, I don’t think the mood is more gloomy, especially since we didn’t have any more serious illnesses. Rather, I see who is more or less affected by the first wave, but is aware that it is not so bad to go to school, mainly because of the community, the conversations, the interaction, the mutual motivation and the inspiration that shapes children’s personality. , helps them feel better.

When it was announced two weeks ago that digital education would be reintroduced for students over the age of 14, the children were obviously saddened, especially the graduates preparing for graduation, looking forward to the prom, graduation, community events of the last period. In pre-attendance education, we did not develop lethargy or panic on the part of the teachers.

If something needs to be said, will elementary schools be closed or not in the next term?

I see across Europe that as far as possible all governments are trying to keep the fourth grade in the system and continue their training on attendance. Educating the younger age group in the digital space is less interpretable anyway. What we got from the lower grades of elementary school in the spring was, in many cases, more appreciated by parents. Obviously, there could be a serious viral situation that could justify the closure of all national educational institutions.

However, I have said before that, instead of centralization, it would be good if the heads of the institutions had the opportunity to make more individual decisions in the situation of the epidemic. After all, each county, settlement, and school has different endowments and opportunities. Just because in a city, people tend to interact much more with each other. At the same time, the final decision must be made by professionals much more familiar with health about the closure of kindergartens and schools, because they know exactly what the current degree of vulnerability is.

Let’s talk a little about her graduation too! Oral exams were not held in the spring term, but a full examination is held in the fall exam period. How would you resolve this contradiction?

The graduation ceremony in May was preceded by a great deal of consultation with the educational action group of which I was a member. In my opinion, it was clear that somehow graduation had to be arranged, only one pedagogical organization, the PDSZ, represented the extreme position to miss graduation entirely. In the end, we got to organize only the writings, which were done well in general in the spring. It was a well-organized and basically safe exam.

As far as I know, only one or two percent of the students failed to take the written matriculation exam in May. I sincerely hope they managed to make it up to you. Now in autumn, due to the smaller number of people, written oral exams can be safely organized using masks, distance, etc.

How difficult was it, even at the level of specific tools, to solve the digital change?

For teachers in most of the country, perhaps with the exception of Central Hungary and the Budapest region, two years ago, school districts provided laptops everywhere. Students can receive help if indicated. Even now, there are certainly students who find this much more difficult to solve. There are surely also difficulties in this regard. There is also no doubt that after two weeks, it turns out that there are students who are more difficult to engage in digital education, in which case we first indicate to the student in question, the parent, that this is the same process as going to school. . It is not about stopping education.
