Coronavirus: the second wave, the second closure

Later than expected by many, but in mid-November, the Hungarian government also decided to try to curb the second wave of the coronavirus epidemic by introducing restrictions. At the time of the decision, 5,000 new infections had been identified per day and the number of deaths from the virus was mostly between 50 and 100 in 24 hours. The first step is a partial closure, but how effective it is is questionable. Follow our news!

In response to a journalist’s question about government information, Gergely Gulyás revealed that he

They take care of 961 people,

That is 321 more than the number of people on a ventilator, according to data released today.

This was the first time the data was officially announced. In the daily statistics, only the number of people in the hospital or on a ventilator is reported, and the number of people in the intensive care unit was not revealed to our multiple questions.

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and other ministers identified the number of patients in intensive treatment with those on the ventilator, respectively, although conversations with doctors and nurses showed that the two numbers did not match, as not all seriously ill patients needed to be ventilated. Now, at least, there is a discrepancy, and it is also clear that the worst-case scenario outlined by the Prime Minister, which requires 2,240 intensive beds by November 21, has not materialized.

Orbán spoke of such a drastic increase in the epidemic even before the introduction of restrictive measures, and justified the tightening simply by avoiding the collapse of the health system. Another issue that the in-depth discussion with professionals revealed is that the load is already very high even in “fluid” Covid departments.

Faced with the government’s information, Minister Gergely Gulyás also said that 15 health workers have died due to a coronavirus infection since spring.
