Speed limits on Hungarian roads are changing

The maximum speed allowed on national highways decreased in several sections of the highway, while it increased only in four places. But there may be more changes.

Magyar Közút inspects the national roads on a daily basis and can also slow down traffic due to the number of accidents and poor road quality. But there was also an example where police asked to increase the speed limit on a highway, Driver wrote.

In 2020, Magyar Közút has modified the maximum permissible speed of vehicles in 27 different sections. The interventions are local, the length of the affected sections is very different, there are also temporary modifications.

It has decreased in many more places than the speed limit has increased in recent years, clearly this is a characteristic change. Between the beginning of 2018 and mid-2019, the maximum permissible speed decreased in a total of 29 road sections, while it increased in only two places.

Of the 27 changes, the pace was reduced 23 times, and there were also road sections in which it was reduced from 100 to 60 km / h. This year, too, there were far fewer places with signs that allowed for faster progress than before – in 2020 there were only four of those places.

For example On main highway 7, on both sides of the 78-kilometer stretch, the previous 50 signs were replaced by 70 signs. This place is the overpass on the main road 8, the so-called Székesfehérvár. emmaroza node. Accident data did not account for 50 km / h, but not more than 70 because of the curved line. Here, the police started the increase.

It has already been decided that three main roads will change signage soon, while three roads are currently under investigation. “On the M7 motorway and on the short section of the M5 and M6 motorways under our management, we are still conducting a traffic review this year. They have not yet been completed,” Magyar Közút wrote.
