This time, the Conscious Consumers Association tested powdered detergents. The test was won by a miller product with a 100 percent result, which is also much cheaper than its rivals behind.
The Conscious Shoppers Association examined a total of thirteen powdered detergents, which are often found in homes and are mostly available anywhere. The test looked at, among other things, how the products adapt to different types of patches.
Efficacy was tested in a laboratory using a method accredited by TVE experts. The test was carried out at 40 degrees with the same washing machine, with the same program, and in each case the dose recommended by the manufacturer was followed. An artificially soiled textile strip was used for the test wash, in which the effect of the wash was checked for 8 different stains. These stains are various impurities that occur in the home, such as cocoa, beet, red wine, mud, grass or oil stains.
In addition to efficiency, composition, environmental and health impacts, packaging and the existence of the EU Ecolabel were included in the final result. (The eco-label shows that the adverse environmental effects of a given product are significantly lower than those of similar products.)
The final result of the free trial showed that a wash with the best powder detergent costs 55 guilders, in the case of the second place the cost will be triple.
It costs almost four times as much
First place was won by the general Blink Öko brand powder detergent available in Müller stores. Of the 100 points (100 percent) that can be obtained, all hundreds were collected. DigIt cleaned music, olive oil, blood, cocoa, red wine stains with an efficiency greater than 90 percent.
Behind it is Amway’s product, “Home SA8 Premium”, a detergent concentrate that can be purchased through the company’s own dealer network or online store. Although this product was more effective in removing blood stains from the test garment, it lagged behind the first situation of contamination by cocoa, charcoal and olive oil. The lack of a credible eco-label was also a negative factor in the assessment. Amwayes’ washing powder was the most expensive in the whole field, with the price of a manufacturer’s recommended serving for one wash being nearly 200 guilders.
Third place went to Unilever’s “Surf Color Tropical Lily & Ylang ylang” powder detergent with a result of 75 percent. With this product, one wash equals 84 guilders.
Smart to wash and dye
In addition to the powdered detergent test, the Conscious Shoppers Association also published a stain remover. This shows that the dirt found on the laundry can be classified by its “origin”, as shown in the figure below.

It may be surprising that the vast majority of dirt and stains penetrate body clothing, but their removal is less macerated compared to other types of stains. The cleaning effect of detergents is due to the effect of different ingredients on different types of dirt. The most common pollutants in the home can be grouped according to their physical and chemical characteristics as follows:
- soluble in water (for example, certain foodborne contaminants)
- Water-insoluble but water-swellable substances that can be removed mechanically (for example, protein-based substances from the human body on clothing).
- Substances insoluble in water but soluble in detergent (eg fat, oil)
- water-insoluble contaminants or organic solvents (e.g. soot, rust, pigments, etc.)
