The man’s lie forced him to quarantine the state of South Australia, which has nearly two million residents, police said.
According to a BBC article, the extremely strict measure had to be ordered after 36 new infections were found in the state on Wednesday, and more importantly, for the first time since April, a patient was detected locally with the virus.
This, in turn, could have been prevented, according to authorities, if a man told the truth and revealed that he worked as a courier at a pizzeria. Instead, he claimed to have gone to the restaurant to consume.
Due to the lie, health professionals believed that the man became infected in a very short time and that the virus strain was attacking the body very aggressively.
Grant StevensThe South Australian police chief said they are unlikely to file a complaint against the man because lying is not punishable by law. However, he later reported that the circumstances of the case were being investigated.
According to information on Friday, the quarantine is expected to be lifted on Saturday, as only three new cases have been diagnosed in the region today.
In Australia, 28,000 people have been identified and 900 have died from the disease since the outbreak began. The spread of the virus has been controlled to a high level at all times with proper contact investigation and targeted closures.
