Mass coronavirus testing will begin in Austria, first for teachers and police officers and then for the entire population, the Austrian government announced on Friday.

The 200,000 Austrian and kindergarten teachers will be evaluated on December 5 and 6, and the partial quarantine is also scheduled to end that weekend. More than 100 test centers will be established to carry out the enterprise on a large scale, MTI reported. After the teachers, the country will be followed by some 40,000 police officers on December 7-8.

The government said the country’s population of nine million will also have a chance to test in the coming weeks.

Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz noted that participation was voluntary. However, he reminded everyone that

a test of a few minutes could avoid a few weeks of quarantine in the country.

Added:

For this reason, we are already asking the entire population to support and participate in this national project. This massive test is a great opportunity for Austria to return to normal until the vaccine is ready.

The Chancellor highlighted, who also announced that another massive test was planned for early 2021.

The Austrian authorities have already ordered a total of € 50 million (HUF 18 billion) in rapid tests based on the detection of antibodies from Roche and Siemens, and are planning new orders. According to the government, the results of these tests will be available in 15 minutes. Free surveys will be available sooner in settlements particularly affected by the epidemic. The Austrian army, the ambulance service and the fire brigade are also involved in the investigations.

It raises important questions about how Hungary will react to all this. Although Viktor Orbán says he regards Austria as a “laboratory”, Human Resources Minister Miklós Kásler called the results of the massive tests in Slovakia a week ago dubious and believed there was no connection between the decline in the number of people infected and massive testing.

Since the outbreak in Austria, with a population of nine million, 235,351 have been identified, of which 2,224 have died from the disease. The number of people who recovered from the infection was 156,483.
