Gergely Gulyás said on Monday that Hungary is better than the European average in terms of the number of infections, the opposition said the cabinet was not prepared for the second wave of the coronavirus epidemic, writes the MTI in a parliamentary report.

Gergely Gulyás The minister in charge of the Prime Minister’s Office said that the Hungarian health system was prepared to be able to provide care for everyone, even with significantly more patients than at present. He stressed that this is the second time since the regime change that an extraordinary legal order has been ordered in Hungary, and Parliament has given its consent to its 90-day extension.

The government should also report regularly on the fight against the epidemic during this period so that everyone can see that Parliament is working, he said. He added that it is important not to spread lies now that the parliament does not sit down, since it controls the actions of the government and also participates in the legislature.

Gergely Gulyás said that during the second wave of the epidemic, the numbers are worse around the world and in Hungary, but the government has used the last few months to prepare and the means to defend itself are available.

Describing the number of infected and dead, the minister said: Hungary is better than the European average.

There are 481 deaths per million people in the EU and 317 in Hungary, he noted that there are 84,652 people infected in the countryside and 25,604 in Budapest, so the number of active people infected exceeds 110,000. He also mentioned that 236 people are being hospitalized and 582 need a ventilator. There are 32 children in need of hospital care, none of them on a ventilator, he added.

Gergely Gulyás said there are 13,049 free hospital beds suitable for the care of patients with coronavirus and 1,634 intensive care beds. This number of beds can be expanded, there are 32-34 thousand beds available within the hospital system and new capacities can be opened if necessary. He also mentioned that the number of PCR tests is around 20,000 a day, this does not include rapid tests. The head of the ministry thanked those involved in the defense.

Regarding the economic situation, he explained: a growth of 4 percent was expected at the beginning of the year, but a recession of 5-7 percent is expected, the epidemic ended eight years of uninterrupted economic growth. Such a situation would have forced the country to kneel in 2010, but now the country can fend for itself, he stressed. The average unemployment rate in the EU is 7.4 percent, in Hungary this figure is 4.7 percent. In September, they were working just 24,000 fewer than a year earlier, he said.

He assessed that all this proves the resilience of the Hungarian economy and justifies the measures taken by the government to protect jobs. The job market is stable, but many have found themselves in a more difficult position and the government is helping them with tax cuts and contributions, among other things. He added that almost 4.5 million people are working in the midst of the epidemic situation, up from 3.6 million in 2010.

Opposition: Orbán fears his power

Gergely Arató (DK) said that the government could not prepare for the second wave of the coronavirus epidemic in the summer, when preventive measures should have been taken,

they were going to sail, balatonize and go to a game.

They left the country in tandem, and the consequence is the current panic, the rush, he said. The government called the international comparisons bogus, the published data was unreliable, and added that when the government “talks about the data back and forth,” the slightest trust in people is lost. “The propaganda of success is not worth that much,” he said, demanding that all the details be made public.

Tímea Szabó (Dialogue) spoke about the fact that Hungary still produces the third worst death rate in Europe. In early summer, it was already known that a strong autumn wave was expected, but Viktor Orbán did nothing to prepare, preferring to reprimand the Dialogue by the government, he said. He put it this way: the ruling parties “beat their chests”, how many ventilators they bought, only in the meantime there are not enough doctors and nurses besides the machines. Viktor Orbán wants to sacrifice the lives of tens of thousands of people because he fears his power, he declared, urging the introduction of a crisis management basic income.

László László Keresztes (LMP) described the situation as extremely bad, and said that it was not in appreciation for what the government said. He quoted a professor from Pécs who, among other things, said they were not enough for the task. The government was not prepared for the second wave, he said, adding that the cabinet had taken action late. Where are the decisions that financially justify the increase in medical salaries? When are steps taken to help families in the most difficult situations? – He listed his questions, also criticizing the deductions that affect local governments.
