Viktor Orbán announced late on Saturday on his official Facebook page in a video that high school students who participate in online education will receive free Internet for thirty days.

Viktor Orbán: High School Students Participating in Online Education Will Receive Free Internet for 30 Days

There will be a discussion with the companies, added the prime minister. Or not?

The prime minister quoted in the video has since appeared in the Hungarian Gazette. Measures to help families affected by digital education during emergencies of the Regulation. This includes:

“The fixed Internet access service will be available free of charge for 30 days given the legal relationship with a secondary school that operates in digital extracurricular activities in public education and vocational training, full-time education and professional training.”

Translated, this means that those involved in digital education can use the internet for free during this period.

The regulations regulate all this in detail so that the free internet service is available to the student with the subscription himself or the legal representative with the subscription (in most cases the parent). Alternatively, educators with an Internet subscription can take advantage of the opportunity for free.

The service can only be used for free in one place, so the owner must choose whether to use the facility at his place of residence, stay or accommodation.

The regulation also establishes that service providers will credit the 30-day discount of the December invoice amount. If you want to use this, notify your online service provider.

It is enough for you to show the service provider that you are aware of your criminal responsibility that the conditions for using the free service are met.

One and a half million Hungarians asked for free in the national consultation

The possibility of a free internet service for digital education is not new, since it was one of the topics in the recent national consultation on the coronavirus. One of the questions submitted in June concerned the digital curriculum and said exactly:

Do you agree that the Internet should be free for families and teachers raising school-age children during the epidemic?

When evaluating the results, it turned out that 1,576,166 people agreed that the mentioned layers should have free access to the Internet; The result published in early October can be found on the official government website koronavírus.gov.hu. (A total of 1,682,295 questionnaires were completed).

Suppliers are already prepared

The Prime Minister also spoke in Saturday’s video that there will be a discussion with businesses on the issue of free internet. However, there is some contradiction in this, as the Index reached two large companies of national service providers after the decree was published on Saturday.

Telekom said they were not unexpectedly affected by the announcement, because free internet as an option was already one of the topics of the aforementioned national consultation, so the consultations had been carried out before.

Due to the extraordinary situation in many respects, Telekom added, the priority for them now is to comply with the government decree and establish a fast and convenient process for their clients. The details of this are already available.

Telekom customers entitled to free Internet can indicate their need for 30 days of free Internet service on the Telekom website and Flip customers on the Flip website between November 18 and 27.

To send the request to an account (for the MT customer ID and the current account number in the upper left of the account) for a Telekom customer, also to an account (for the customer ID and the number of current account in the top right of the account) for a Flip customer, and the so-called Educational ID will be required.

Customers can also use the 30-day free service via the integrated package, as the Internet service with a 5% VAT content already appears as a separate item on the invoice. The 30-day fee waiver will appear on customer invoices received in December, Magyar Telekom’s corporate communications department responded to the Index.

Vodafone Hungary’s press department said the service provider will continue to work closely with the government to develop measures to support education, the public and businesses during the second wave of the coronavirus.

Vodafone is also making fixed internet access service truly free for 30 days, as required by the government. For high school students, their parents, and the teachers who teach them, the service provider will credit the one-month internet access service subscription fee for a subscription address on the December bill.

Affected subscribers can contact the service provider. More details will be available on the service provider’s website.
