A fire broke out in the intensive care unit of the Piatra Neamț County Hospital for coronavirus patients in eastern Romania on Saturday night, killing ten people, seven in critical condition.

In the two wards of the intensive care unit, eight to eight coronavirus-infected patients who were already seriously ill and could not breathe independently were treated. Among the injured is the doctor on duty, who suffered burns while trying to rescue coronavirus patients from the fire.

News television reported that one of the automated equipment caught fire and the fire spread through an oxygen-enriched environment in a matter of seconds.

Firefighters who arrived at the scene prevented the fire from spreading to the rest of the hospital. The SMURD ambulance service will transport the survivors to Iași, where they will be cared for by the intensive care unit of a newly commissioned mobile hospital for Covid-19 patients on the outskirts of the city.

Health Minister Nelu Tataru traveled to the scene and Prime Minister Ludovic Orban supervises the work of the crisis team created in the Interior Ministry.

In the case, the Office of the Attorney General of the Nation initiated a process against an unknown author on suspicion of homicide by negligence.
