In Croatia, the death toll from the coronavirus epidemic has exceeded 1,000 and the number of new coronavirus patients needing hospital treatment has continued to rise, the crisis team said in a statement on Saturday.

The panel reports that 2,866 new infections have been identified in the last day, bringing the number of people infected since the start of the epidemic to 81,844. Another 38 people died from the disease last day, bringing the death toll from the epidemic to 1,006 so far. The hospital cares for 1,655 patients, 184 of whom are connected to ventilators.

The response to the coronavirus epidemic in Croatia is one of the most liberal in the European Union. It is mandatory to wear the mask everywhere, but violators are not punished, except for legal entities.

The measures are mainly limited to the number of participants in the events, sporting events can only be held without spectators, and restaurants must close before midnight.

Health Minister Vili Beros told reporters that the measures are well balanced. “I believe that the epidemic situation in our country, regardless of the measures, is not different from the epidemic situation in other European countries, although we do not have such strict restrictive measures,” he said, adding that they seek a balance between economic activity and health maintenance.

Zagreb this week launched a public debate on a national exchange plan aimed at turning the euro into a currency in Croatia from January 1, 2023. However, all convergence criteria must be met over the next two years, including a annual public deficit of no more than 3% of gross domestic product (GDP) and a gross public debt of no more than 60% of GDP.

In neighboring Slovenia, according to data released by the cabinet on Saturday, the number of infected people has risen by 1,731 to 54,116 in the past 24 hours. Forty-one patients died, bringing the death toll to 765. Of the diagnosed patients, 1,224 are in hospital, 201 of whom are cared for in an intensive care unit.

All meetings in the country are prohibited. There is a night curfew and a day curfew, and a mask is still mandatory everywhere. Kindergartens and educational institutions will be closed for another two weeks, teaching will take place in the form of distance learning, and shops selling non-essential products, restaurants, hotels and industrial service providers will not be able to open.
