The man, who is suspected of stabbing an elderly passenger in the neck on the tram because he said he was wearing the mask correctly, was arrested on motion of the Metropolitan Attorney General’s Office, the Metropolitan Prosecutor’s Office reported to the MTI in a statement on Saturday.

The Attorney General’s Office said there was a well-founded suspicion that a 40-year-old man was at the beginning of November 12 in the early hours of the IX. district, on the Könyves Kálmán körút tram 1, so that the mask did not cover his nose.

It was then that an elderly passenger asked him to put on the mask correctly. The man was outraged by this and began abusing the speaking passenger. When the victim asked the driver of the vehicle for help, the suspect pulled out a knife, threatened to kill his traveling companion, and then stabbed him in the neck. Then he got off the tram and left the scene.

Police officers from the Budapest Police Headquarters identified and arrested the attacker within a few hours and then detained him.

According to the statement, the victim suffered only minor injuries, but it was only by accident that no more serious and fatal injuries occurred. Therefore, they can also conclude that it is actually an assassination attempt.

The Metropolitan Prosecutor’s Office has requested the arrest of the man because, in their opinion, there is a risk that the suspect will escape, hide and repeat the crime. The investigating judge ordered the coercive measure for a month according to the reasons for the appeal.

The order is not final, against the suspect and his lawyer have appealed.
