The government introduces a band guarantee

Starting next year, the mandatory guarantee rules in Hungary will change significantly. One of the most important innovations is the introduction of a bandwidth guarantee, writes the Ministry of Innovation and Technology.

The decision is justified by the fact that the buyer has the right to expect the manufacturer to take responsibility for the usability and quality of the more expensive products for a longer period of time. Instead of the current year, products purchased on or after January 1, 2021 can have a warranty period of up to 2-3 years, depending on the price.

  • The warranty for products between 10,000 and 100,000 HUF is still one year.
  • However, for products over 100,000 HUF, there are already two
  • and for those over 250,000 HUF, we can enforce our warranty claim for three years.

The change also serves sustainability goals by encouraging manufacturers to produce more durable products, which can reduce the amount of electronic and other waste.

Starting in early 2021, the range of products covered by the mandatory warranty will be expanded with, among others, solar panels, drones or electric scooters. Manufacturers must also provide a warranty for, for example, doors and windows, shutters, garage doors, faucets, bathtubs and shower stalls that are more expensive than 10,000 HUF.

Some products need to be professionally installed before use – this is most likely to happen with gas stoves, even long after they have been purchased. If commissioning occurs more than six months after purchase, the warranty start date will be the product purchase date. If it is within six months, the warranty period will still begin on the day of commissioning, which can be up to three years, depending on the value limit.

In 2021, the Consumer Protection Authority will monitor compliance with new regulations in both traditional and online commerce throughout the year.
